This is the weblog of the Ure River Research Project, the project to research River Ure in North Yorkshire England

This is the first entry on the log as the project has only just started. We are in the initial phases of research and putting the outline project plan into action. Masham Town Hall has been booked for the 16th of June, 14th of July and the 18th of August. The first talk has been announced, and we are finalising details of our Geophysics Weekend, which is currently happening on the 26th of June 2004.

We have a great many more activities planned that we will be announcing later on.

Here's an interesting note just uncovered about the behaviour of the local townsfolk during the Jacobite Revolution in 1746 - just fouteen years after the flood:

"The good people of Mashamshire were thrown into a great state of alarm by a report that the young Pretender had gained a great victory over the English army (probably Falkirk) and that the Scot's army was advancing rapidly towards the neighbourhood. Panic-struck they immediately started to hide all their precious possessions in the most extraordinary places and in the most ludicrous manner, not forgetting themselves, in the best way they were able. After the danger was past the many ridiculous scenes with the panic gave rise to were much talked of and were remembered by the name "Runaway Wednesday".

Fisher, History of Mashamshire, 1865.
